Tapping Noise In Roof Space

Wall or attic sounds scratching or scurrying from within a wall or ceiling.
Tapping noise in roof space. A loose attic vent or shutter on a window can make a banging noise in the wind. While a random knocking noise that only occurs once doesn t necessarily mean anything repeated similar sounds are a sure sign that an animal is living in your attic. A loose shutter on an attic window or loosened attic vents can cause a banging sound if it s windy as can branches hitting the roof. And you ll hear noises from nesting birds especially in spring and summer.
Most customers will hear these chirping noises in the attic or ceiling. Usually this is right below a louver gable end vent. Birds in the bathroom vents are often starlings and house sparrows. Looking there i noticed our turbine vents were spinning quickly and a couple of them were making sounds which when combined sounded like a pack of mice.
No running or chewing noises but there is a tapping noise in the walls and the sound. It literally sounds like someone punching sheetrock. Sometimes you will hear a knocking while other times you may notice a scurrying sound thumping noise or something else. Birds get into roof spaces to shelter and sleep in the winter.
In rare cases in one particular roof assembly with standing seam panels the expansion contraction sounds can become louder inside a building. Air passing through ducts and radiators can sometimes create a loud noise as can water passing through pipes. If they like the place they ll start to make a home creating a tapping sound in the wall at night while tearing at ductwork and digging into the insulation. They enter attics looking for shelter.
It comes from all around the room. The sounds are typically only audible if you re on or near the roof or if the underside of the metal decking is exposed to finished interior space. Right now it is 8 degrees f outside. You can probably guess what this means a rodent or some other small animal has gotten into your house.
Heating ducts as they cool also make banging noises as do. Upon entering the attic space i could hear the sound coming from the upper mid section of the roof. When you hear a banging coming from the attic and are trying to determine the cause you are most likely dealing with one of these four animals. As i sit here in bed trying to get some sleep i cannot.
Most of the noises seem to be coming from the top of the walls. If you hear a knocking sound in your attic this is a pretty good indication that an animal of some sort has taken up residence in that space. Some birds cause noise problems all day as well with nuisance behaviour on roofs and chimneys. Frequently people hear chirping noises in the attic at one end of their house.
Raccoons have a notorious reputation for getting stuck in attics and waking the whole house.
